On Ross’ wildlife boat trips Horsey you will see the magnificent Dragonfly. “A dragonfly is an insect…characterised by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings and an elongated body. Dragonflies possess six legs (like any other insect), but most of them cannot walk well. Dragonflies are among the fastest flying insects in the world. Dragonflies can fly backwards, change direction in mid-air and hover for up to a minute”[excerpt from Wikipedia]
In the past a dragonfly would be called the Devil’s Darning Needle or a Horse Stinger but they do no harm to humans. In fact one of their food sources is mosquitoes so that makes them rather beneficial to us! They also eat “other small insects like flies, bees, ants, wasps and, very rarely, butterflies.” They themselves are “preyed upon by birds, lizards, frogs, spiders, fish, water bugs and even other large dragonflies.”
Whether you are local or just visiting beautiful Norfolk you will enjoy the wonders of wildlife on Ross’ wildlife boat trips. I hope to see you soon.
