The Eagle Great Hockham History
Historical records tell us that following the Black Death in 1348 the number of recorded brewers declined in most towns and villages, but Hockham bucked that trend. In fact the number of brewers in Hockham actually increased with ale being brewed and consumed inside proper ale-houses rather than being sold and consumed outside the brewers’ house. In 1367 records show that fines were imposed on four Hockham brewers because they sold ale inside their establishments, giving substance to the fact that Hockham appears to be one of the earliest recorded rural examples of the development of the public house. Aaron the owner bought the freehold in 2013 and has made lots of changes and improvements. One of these main changes has been to open up the pub’s enclosed rear brick-weave courtyard so that is can be easily accessed from the games bar via a new set of doors. Plus the kitchen at The Eagle now offers a midweek lunchtime menu and the full bar menu Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays. CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide lists almost 5000 of the best real ale pubs in the UK and The Eagle Great Hockham are really proud to be amongst the 105 pubs selected from well over 700 pubs across Norfolk! The Eagle village pub and bar was included for the 1st time in the 2016 edition and we are delighted that The Eagle has been recognised for the 4th consecutive year running for the quality of its real ales by CAMRA members. The Eagle tries really hard to offer our customers an excellent range of real ales, including those from local brewers. The Eagle works hard to ensure that the real ales on offer are kept in first-class condition and the pub’s inclusion for a fourth consecutive year highlights this.
Whether you are local or just visiting Great Hockham, Breckland or Norfolk, you will always receive a warm welcome at The Eagle Hockham Pub and Bar Restaurant.
We hope to see you soon.
